Re: who wants to talk about energy?
Energy...I'll talk to you about energy! but I wont stop there...water, power, food, local authority, family security. Off the grid self sufficency is the ONLY answer.
But if i was really serious I would have to sell the hoss for a horse...
Had the solar guys install a full load profile array over last week which will mean no more power bills - for this house anyway. Looks like I got a few trees to trim.

Are metal roofs standard down there?
And did the contractor smash up his truck is it suppose to be that short?
Good looking job, did you go off grid with batteries?

Re: who wants to talk about energy?
We got all types but sheet roofing here is the way to go. We can see the grid across the river but 50k to connect + easements then you still got power bills. System was 80k but govt green grant pays half and battery backup for 5 days but each day on average should be replenished by the 60 odd panels. 8kva deisel backup just in case we get a nuke winter cause I cant live a minute without Sci fi channel.vrrmm wrote:Trees will help but you would be surprised how littleAussie Rob wrote:Energy...I'll talk to you about energy! but I wont stop there...water, power, food, local authority, family security. Re: who wants to talk about energy?
Keep in mind our southern climate (...current climate) is much more balanced than what most of the northern hemispere have to deal with. As you can see, the pics were taken smack-dab in the middle of winter and yes its a nice day and gets chilly at night but nuthin really cold. You'll see a chimney stack on the roof and 100 acres of heating fuel in the background, but I do admit to stealing some LPG in the evenings as I couldnt raise an axe handle after doing my bit of the install work and might as well enjoy it while its still flowing.vrrmm wrote:What are you using for heat?

Vrrmm bro...before we get rebel slagged by the non-survivalists and the theres-plenty-of oil-&-its-all-a-scam ist's, I think I'll ask my local mod mate to move our energy bs to Off Topic ay!
Re: who wants to talk about energy?
I hate to say it but now it personal I get people calling every day saying they are done with oil and electric companies.
And getting so your bills are nothing or let's say $20 a year for heat, a/c, and eletric is just the best way to do it.

Re: who wants to talk about energy?
Rob,
Very cool setup. Terrain looks very similar to the environment I live in. The difference is lattitude of course, my 4,000' elevation, and very brutal winters.
I've thought about wind in addition to solar. There are a number of options with personal wind turbines that look quite interesting.
The problem I've had with all this is the acquisition costs. For wind and solar to make us self sufficient, it would take 30 years worth (including the electric company doing a energy buy back for the excess we can produce) of not paying bills to get to the purchase dollars laid out. I'm in me mid 50's. Perhaps if I was a 20 year old again....for many reasons!

Re: who wants to talk about energy?
all this general energy talk is good stuff...but where's our hydrogen V8 so we can really get excited about the future of our lifestyle? The way things are going at the bowser how can BH, V8Chopper, et al expect to forecast growth in their business plans. Sitting down with Rad and doing a SWOT analysis must be an experience...lets do one now.
Boss Hoss inc...5 year Lookahead SWOT
Strengths;
Established clientelle
Brand
Customer feedback?
Weaknessess;
Transmission dont burn into 2nd gear
High Retail Price
Opportunities;
Alternative fueled bike? (Hydrogen, Free energy magnet motor , new 2 speed gravity powered 'roll & stop')
Threats;
Growth of competitors (eg; V8Chopper)
Price of Fuel
Green policies
Economy
Got anything to add?
