Transmission rear mount

Post by knockdolian »

Hi all, hope everyone is staying safe and well.
I showed a time back my rear transmission bolts had come lose on my trike causing a vibration. Going for a ride today and had the same issue. Unfortunately this time the threads have let go. These are 3/8 UNC. The bolts a re quite short for what they do. The only way to repair it is thread inserts but you can’t get to them because of the cross member is in the way. So do I remove the transmission, or remove the cross member and make it so I can bolt it back in place. Other alternative is to drill large holes big enough to drill tap and fit the inserts. Really don’t want to remove the transmission unless I really have to.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks

Here is the answer your not wanting to hear. But it comes from Tim Dalbec (Dr. Nesco).

"Hi Gerry, the only way that I think it can be repaired would be by Healy coil the holes. Yes the transmission would have to be removed. Thanks TIMMY D."

This is not what I wanted to hear especially as I’ve just cut the cross member out. Fortunately up on axle stands there is plenty of room to helicoil the back of the box from underneath and room to weld the cross member back once repaired so no harm done, I hope !!

Weld flanges on both side of your frame tubes.
That would make it removable??? It's been done
before, nothing new...

Is this on a trike or a bike???

Thanks Paul and Orlando. Taking the box out is probably the correct thing to do but I jumped the gun. That rear mount is a silly design and I’m not convinced 2 x 3/8 bolts cuts it. The bolt holes are for a cover. Is the rear of a TH350 box secured in a car by the same two holes ?

Sorry Paul, forgot to reply. It’s on the trike. I cut the cross member out leaving enough metal both sides to the frame. Helicoiled the transmission and fixed 3/8 studs. Used a bit of 50mm x 6mm across the frame. Drilled and bolted to the remains of the original cross member. 3x 8mm bolts both sides. It’s stopped the vibration and should assist in removing the transmission in the future should I need to..
some may consider this a bodge but it works. Thanks
Stay safe :england:
