Handlebar Start Button Not Working

Post by The Mindless Philosopher »

Ride:
2001 Boss Hoss ZZ4 (BHC-3)

Symptoms (ignition key in start/run position):
- Intermittent starts (might not turn starter at all) from handlebar start button (kill switch not activated)
- Low volume clicking/ticking noise when handlebar start button is pushed
- Battery has a full charge
- Fuses are good
- Bypass switch (if equipped) starts engine

Cure:
Clean the electrical contacts or replace the starter relay (Tyco Electronics 12 Volt high current boat relay: TE V23234-A1001-X033; $6 part at the time of this post)

The clicking/ticking noise coming from the relay switch is the dead giveaway of the problem; it should not be making any noise at all.

Quick troubleshooting/only a few seconds to narrow down.

This likely applies to other makes/models, though your particular starter relay might have a different part number.
