Mefi5A on the LS 3

Post by Frog »

G'day all, I am new here and thought I might ask if any one has a map file I can buy for the 2011 LS3 camed bikes.
Here in Oz our fuel is pure 98ron (different RON to the US). the problem is the bike was mapped for US fuel and I think the Ethanol content requires a lot more fuel, thus when the bike was on the dyno last week The A/F was all over the shop. 15-17:1 at idle and up to 2000rpm then drops to 13:1 until it get to 3000rpm and from there up it flat lines on the bottom of the graph at 10:1. the bike is only making 279hp.
the main problem is that when the bike is in drive, if you give it a little throttle to move off then let it back to idle it is going so lean that the engine stalls. this is nasty if you are stopped in traffic waiting to turn across a lane. I have tried Boss Hoss but they cannot help. the fault has been there since new but it is a cammed bike so there is no warranty and less assistance.
please correct me if I have made any incorrect assumptions re the tune or fuel in the USA.

Sorry can't give proven numbers but it is common belief here in Oz that the USA fuel blend is way different. we only have E10 and that is not very easy to find. I had an carbi engine built in the states that was dynoed at 674 hp with 12.8:1 A/F. when it was installed and tested on our 98ron it made 470hp at 10:1 and only got 3 KM/lt, the jets were way to big. the ZZ4 bikes with Mefi4B ECU when warming up at idle would have the catalytic convertors cherry red from the excess fuel.

Our fuel is e10 as well. You have to go out of your way to find ethanol free.

If that is the case then it comes down to a botched job on the tune.
Does anyone know of a cost effective way around the "pass word" on the ECM so it doesn't have to be erased and completely retuned?

I only run ethanol free gas in my bike. Luckily here in South Florida, with all of the boats and marinas around, REC90 is very common. Local speed shops sell Sunoco high octane leaded premium in 5 gallon cans for $65 a can. Frog, do boats have restrictions on your gas down under?

Not that I am aware of. We have 91, 95, 98 ron and E10 if you can find it. The 91 is nasty stuff, if left unused in a vehicle for a few months you are left with a sticky mess that blocks and destroys all rubber bits. I wont even use the crud in the lawn mower.

Contact these guys:

Best thing is to replace ECU and have it tuned on Dyno.
If they can’t do a turnkey job then find a reputable place that will.
You can stay with GM or go aftermarket, they’re all good.

If money is tight or if you’re happy with existing gauges, Get a new unlocked GM ECU and existing wiring harness, etc can be used, most simple, cost effective way forward.
Go meet those guys, discuss options, make a decision.
