Taking a trip out west.

Tomorrow morning Deb and I leave for a 10 day trip
to Arizona. We have two trikes loaded in the trailer
and I think Deb has the suitcases packed so after about
22 hours of driving we might just be able to enjoy the
toys again. We don't have much planned except a
visit to Joe at Kewl Metal to get the front end straightened
out on Billys trike. He told me it has a bike front end that
really isn't designed for a trike and that is why I always had
that nasty low speed wobble.

If anyone has any advise on great roads or must see
places please let us know.

So interesting thing is I rode Billy's trike way before he did much fixings to it...when it was brown and ugly...which now it is for my money, the very best looking trike out there....I was in Dyersburg and he let me ride it on a V8 sortie....it wobbled a lot at those slow speeds and my take this was a trike thing...in fact it turned me off to them a bit. I only say this as it might be more than that Kewl as it was like that before. Perhaps those dampners may help out. Have you heard from others if those front-ends are wobbley?

At the moment I do not remember are the details on amounts of rake or when the changes were made, but Boss Hoss has used 2 different sets of trees on the stock trikes and the later trees have slightly more rake to help with this issue. If the trike has a bike kewlmetal kit then this is the first thing that would really need to be changed before anything else could be found. The dampner is really not a good option for installation on the kewlmetal trees because it would be difficult to mount. I had considered trying to adapt one to my bike last summer so that Ron could then put it on his trike but when comparing them the sleeves for the kit were installed differently so even if I got it to work on mine it would then not transfer to his. I spent quite a bit of time on Debs ls2 57 chevy last fall after my tranny broke and I do not remember any wobble on it. Her trike though of course is lighter and has the newer factory rake. I hope you are wrong about the possible additional problems, we should find out in a few days for sure.

We made it to Tucumcari New Mexico tonight and decided that was
far enough for a man of my advanced age. Now I read all this about
Billys trike. Damn I had forgotten it was that UGLY Brown
trike I saw Pete riding a couple years ago in Dyersburg.

I realize all Big Block trikes have some low speed wobble but
this thing is 10 tiimes worse than any other trike I have ridden
and I believe getting the correct trees will cure the problem.

Now need to research the info Darryl was so kind to provide.

We were near Alamogordo, NM and there was still snow in the mountains. We were kind of surprised. But the snow was only on the mountains with trees on them.


We went to the White Sands National Monument just outside of Alamogordo, NM. It was really neat. Looks a lot like snow from a distance but it's sand!




Not sure what we will do tomorrow but I'll try to take pics and post them tomorrow.

If you have the chance to go any farther west, visit the Carlsbad Caverns. Really worth to see!! If you are heading north, make a short stop over in Fort Sumner/NM - and visit the grave of Billy the Kid.

You did a nice job on that 97 build,WM. That's one of the cleanest early models I've seen.

Our trike is an 06 and its triple trees have +3 rake. In 07,BH changed the trees to a +5. I've heard it makes a big difference in stability but unfortunately,I've never ridden an 07 or later trike to check it out. Adding a Pingel steering damper to our 06 eliminated the majority of the steering wobble/shake.

Pretty sure Ron's 57 has Kewl's bike trees on it. Don't think the newer KM trike trees were available when it was re-done. If so,the correct trike trees should make a huge difference.

The steering stop on the lower tree of our trike is the front attachment point for our 06's steering damper bracket,instead of the fork slider. What would keep one from adding a damper to a KewlMetal-equipped bike or trike in the same manner?

Yesterday we had really slow internet connection so couldn't upload any pics. But today I have faster internet so here is what we have been doing.

I'm just not used to seeing cactus everywhere! I am used to mountains covered in pine trees.

Today I picked up MY 57 Chevy trike from Joe at Kewl Metal
and now that it has a set of trike trees it is a totally different
machine! I can start from dead stop and accelerate with just
one hand on the bars with no wobble at all.

We rode another couple hundred miles today and the weather
is just great! Gonna be real hard to come home from this.

Good seeing those pics. Having just rode out there with David and crew, it was good seeing that scenery again. Hopefully, you made it to Tombstone or Brisbee. Both were awesome rides and good destinations. Have fun, ride safe...

Next we went up to Sedona and the ride up there was nice and scenic.

After wandering around Sedona we headed toward Prescott, AZ and went thru an old copper mining town called Jerome. It is literally built on the side of a hill. Here is one of the buildings there.


Than we went thru a mountain pass to get to Prescott and there was still snow on the ground.

Wow! Those hills/monoliths in Sedona area are magnificent! And the snow during your trip kinda reminds me of here....
